Frequently Asked Questions
Why is human food/dog treats prohibited inside dog park?
Bringing human food or dog treats into a dog park setting can end in disaster. Dogs have powerful senses and they can smell food from the opposite end of the dog park. They will smell the food/treats, start following the person holding it, more dogs will congregate around hoping to get a treat, and this will easily escalate to a dog fight. Some dogs are food aggressive, some have resource guarding tendencies, some have allergies to certain proteins and will get extremely ill if offered an off limits food or treat. Please leave all dog treats at home, eat your meals before you visit, or find an alternative location to have that family picnic.
Does Kitsap County manage and fund the local dog parks?
No! Per the original agreement, a non-profit organization will act as a stewardship group to manage and oversee the daily needs of dog parks in Kitsap County. We have a board of volunteers that work together to raise donations/funding, maintain the daily needs, and manage of all dog parks here in Kitsap County. Recently Kitsap County has decided to change their approach and be more involved with our local dog parks. While the stewardship groups still remain in place, volunteers now work hand in hand with Kitsap County to manage the overall needs of our dog parks.
Why are there 2 separate play areas?
Silverdale Dog Park offers two play areas for dogs to enjoy themselves in. The gate to the left opens into a large play area that is suitable for dogs over 25lbs. The gate to the right opens to a smaller play area suitable for dogs under 25lbs. We offer two separate areas because not all small dogs are comfortable around larger dogs. Large dogs like to play rough and could easily hurt a smaller dog during an innocent game of play or chase. To help minimize the risk large dogs pose to smaller dogs, we offer a separate play area to ensure the safety of smaller dogs. Our goal is to provide a positive off-leash play time for all breeds, shapes, and sizes.
Where do I report incidents that happen at the dog park?
Always call 911 first to report any incidents or dog fights, emergency and non-emergency, that may happen while you’re visiting the dog park. They will automatically report the incident to animal control. In addition we ask that you report these to dog park volunteers to help maintain our efforts to provide a safe place for all visitors.
